You need to watch the movie "I Am Sam", it literally left me cry and up till now I still feel so deep down. I'd say it's not just a story, it's a slow narration of heartbreak and stubborn hope, told in real human tone.
Sam Dawson wasn't born the usual normal human with average IQ. He had the mind of a child but the heart of a true parents. Lucy's mother left her dad to take care of her. She never felt what it's like to have a mom. I nearly cried when her classmates made fun of Lucy because of her father's IQ. To hide her dad's pain, she just ignored it all.
Then there's this scene where Sam wanted to buy Lucy school shoes but couldn't afford them, even with assistance from his friends. But in a single blink, people silently stepped forward with little donations. Even without words those simple gestures have me goose bumps. It left me really emotional.
The next was the courtroom, it was a cold place where the world doubted Sam's worth because of what he was. Then Sam broke down saying that he's not enough. I'd actually cry on his behalf.
And Lucy the clever compassionate child, chooses to shelter her dad from her very own progress. She'd keep them to herself, so afraid to outgrow him. That wasn't just a choice, it was a sacrifice. A sad one to make.
But despite all of this, Sam's love never grows cold. Out of sacrifice too, he asks her foster mother, who can offer what he can't, to help raise his daughter, not to replace him though. The fact that he was so helpless left me in tears.
Though it ends in joy, it's not those types in fairytales. But in a quiet scene where Lucy plays soccer with Sam, surrounded by the family they had built. Friends, her foster mom, the lawyer and even neighbours. The world didn't get to change, but they did, together.
I cried thrice or maybe even more. Sam didn't get to win that right to be perfect, but he claimed the right to love his beautiful girl. He was all she ever actually wanted.
