THE SET DESIGNER

When the director called me for the new stage production, I was so excited. It was my first major job as a set designer. However, my excitement quickly turned into concern when I saw the many challenges ahead.

Of course, I would be responsible for planning and creating the visual environment of a production, including the scenery, props and layout where the action takes place. But I discovered there were challenges associated with it.

The budget would be small and the time would be limited and I would have to act fast. But instead of complaining, I will choose to be creative. I will visit local markets to gather wood, fabric and other materials that can be reused. With imagination and careful planning, I will turn simple items into beautiful stage designs.

The theatre space might be small, so I will design flexible set that can change from one scene to another. By using platforms, curtains and smart arrangements, I would create different locations on the same stage.

At times, the director will question my ideas. Rather than argue, I will explain my designs with sketches and models. Through patience and clear communication, we will reach agreements that will improve the production.

Safety will always be important to me. Before rehearsals begin, I will test every part of the set to ensure it is strong and safe for the actors.

If the script is suddenly changed, I will remain calm because my design will be flexible. I will just adjust the set without stress.

And after everything, as I stand backstage, I will admire what I have done and smile with pride, knowing that I will have learned that a successful set designer is not one who avoid challenges but one who overcome them with creativity, planning and determination.
