BALANCING STUDIES AND WELLNESS: HEALTHY HABITS FOR STUDENTS
Life as a student can sometimes be overwhelming and confusing, especially for freshers who are still trying to understand how the school system works. Knowing class schedules, locating lecture halls, trying to be punctual—especially for 8 a.m. classes—and ensuring that important information is not missed can be very stressful. These pressures can often lead to unhealthy lifestyles and practices.
For example, waking up late may result in not having enough time to freshen up properly, which can lead to body odour. Similarly, skipping breakfast because of a busy schedule can affect a student’s health and energy levels, and in the long run may lead to malnourishment. However, despite busy schedules, students can still create healthy habits through small and consistent lifestyle changes.
Physical appearance and personal hygiene are important. Setting an alarm to wake up early gives students enough time to freshen up before leaving for class. Making use of basic hygiene products such as roll-on deodorant, body lotion, and perfume can go a long way. There is no need for a large perfume collection; simple essentials are enough. Good hygiene not only boosts confidence but also helps people around you feel comfortable, especially during hot weather when sweating is common.
When it comes to food, everyone has their preferences. Some students prefer buying food, while others prefer cooking. Whichever option works best, it is important to remember that you are what you eat. Cooking does not have to be complicated. As students, eating nutritious meals helps keep us full and provides the energy needed for daily activities. Simple food choices are ideal for a busy student. For breakfast, oats are a quick and healthy option. Carrying a snack to class can help prevent hunger. For lunch, meals like spaghetti are easy to prepare, and for dinner, simple foods such as swallow (eba) can be eaten. The key is not how complex the food is, but being mindful of what is being consumed.
Hydration is also an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. As the saying goes, “water is life.” Drinking enough water throughout the day helps the body function properly, improves concentration, and prevents fatigue. Students should make a habit of carrying water and staying hydrated during lectures and other activities.
Another important factor in maintaining wellness as a student is sleep management. Adequate sleep helps improve focus, memory, and overall academic performance. Students should aim to maintain a regular sleep schedule, avoid staying up too late unnecessarily, and limit screen time before bed. Proper rest allows the body and mind to recover from daily stress.
Overall, consistency is the foundation of building healthy habits. Healthy living does not require perfection, but commitment to small actions repeated daily. By being consistent with personal hygiene, healthy eating, hydration, and sleep, students can successfully balance their academic responsibilities with their well-being.
