Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed his willingness to comply with the conditions set by the Nigerian government for his release, according to Nigerian Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. Senator Abaribe revealed this development after meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, in Abuja. He stated that Kanu is supportive of the senators' plea for his release.
Senator Abaribe, who represents Abia South District and had previously stood as surety for Kanu in 2017, led a group of 14 South-east senators in discussions with Mr. Fagbemi. Abaribe emphasized that Kanu is ready to fulfill any conditions that will expedite his release.
However, Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Kanu, clarified that Kanu did not agree to abide by just any conditions for his release. Instead, he agreed to adhere to "negotiated terms" similar to those previously discussed in August 2017. Ejimakor's statement came after he and other legal team members visited Kanu.
In 2017, the South-east Governors Forum met with Kanu to address his concerns. A communiqué from that meeting emphasized the need for dialogue to resolve the issues amicably, a process that was interrupted by military operations at the time.
The latest discussions between the senators, Kanu, and the government indicate a renewed effort to secure Kanu's release through negotiation and adherence to agreed terms.
