In a dramatic twist within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), heavyweight Bode George has stepped into the limelight, vehemently rejecting the growing chorus for a suspension of the party’s national convention slated for November 15 and 16, 2025, in the vibrant city of Ibadan, Oyo State's bustling capital.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki stirred the pot recently, urging the PDP leadership to reconsider the convention amidst alarming court orders that could potentially undercut its legitimacy. Saraki's bold proposition for a caretaker committee came during an exclusive gathering with the party’s Board of Trustees Reconciliation Team at his Abuja residence, igniting a firestorm of debate that has left party members divided.
In a fiery interview with ARISE News, George didn't hold back, branding Saraki's suggestions as not just unnecessary, but a blatant violation of PDP's constitution! He rallied behind the idea that, despite internal squabbles, the party is undeniably united. “You know, in this country, it amazes me the way people roll around purely for their selfish ends,” George exclaimed, directly targeting Saraki for his lack of action since initiating reconciliation efforts. “So what has he done? Telling us on the eve of the convention that we should go and form a caretaker committee. You know, I totally disagree with him,” he declared, underscoring a fierce loyalty to the party's current direction.
George, with his finger firmly on the party's pulse, reassured supporters that the PDP's leadership remains solid with strong backing from the National Working Committee (NWC). “The main party is still solidly intact. We are waiting for the ruling of the court in Ibadan. The Supreme Court has ruled that all party activities should be solved internally,” he reminded critics, suggesting that external interference only complicates matters.
But the drama didn't stop there! George unleashed a scathing indictment of what he termed “reckless behavior” among certain party members. He lamented that such actions not only threaten the party's legacy but also reveal an acute level of “existential imbecility” among dissenters. “The founding fathers, for God’s sake, will be shaking in their graves,” he lamented, painting a picture of a party on the verge of losing its identity if it continues down this tumultuous path.
In a pointed attack on the suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, George accused him of spreading misinformation regarding the convention's postponement. “How many of them are together? Let me tell you this. A few weeks ago, they had the National Working Committee meeting, with about 19 members. Only three, out of the 19, are in the Anyanwu group. That’s why I said you hear the voice of Jacob, but the hand of Esau,” he quipped, casting doubt on the legitimacy of dissenting voices.
As the PDP finds itself at a critical juncture, the party's leadership grapples with not just maintaining unity but also ensuring that the upcoming national convention proceeds without a hitch. The outcome of this internal power struggle could reshape the party's trajectory and influence within Nigeria's political arena!
