Plateau Killing: Governor Mutfwang Says Identity Of Attackers Still Unknown - 1wk ago

Plateau State governor Caleb Mutfwang says security agencies are yet to identify those behind the deadly attack on Angwan community, describing the incident as a barbaric act of criminality that has shaken the state.

Speaking with journalists at the Presidential Villa in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu, the governor explained that investigators have not been able to establish who carried out the assault or what specifically motivated it.

Mutfwang said he visited the president to brief him on the killings, the security response and the steps being taken by the state government to stabilise the affected area and prevent further violence.

He confirmed that the immediate chaos following the attack has been contained, with security forces deployed to restore order and protect residents. According to him, bodies of the victims have been evacuated to the mortuary, while some families have already conducted burials in line with local customs.

The governor disclosed that a curfew was imposed on the community to forestall reprisals and further bloodshed. The restriction was later relaxed to allow residents limited movement, but fresh tension flared when looters attempted to exploit the situation.

He said security operatives moved swiftly to disperse the troublemakers and reassert control, adding that by midday the area had largely calmed, though security remained on high alert.

Mutfwang cautioned against rushing to simplistic explanations for the violence, noting that crises of this nature often stem from a complex mix of factors. He stressed that a clearer picture can only emerge when both survivors and perpetrators are properly interviewed.

However, he admitted that the absence of any arrested suspects has hampered efforts to determine the attackers’ identities, affiliations or precise motives. For now, he said, authorities are treating the incident as a grave criminal act rather than assigning it to any particular group.

The governor condemned the killings in strong terms, calling them inhuman and unacceptable. He pledged that his administration, working with federal security agencies, will pursue the perpetrators and intensify measures to protect vulnerable communities across Plateau State.
