Galatasaray have turned to Victor Osimhen as an unlikely transfer negotiator, asking the Super Eagles star to help persuade compatriot Ademola Lookman to swap Madrid for Istanbul in the current window.
The Turkish champions are pushing hard to sign Lookman from Atlético Madrid after the winger’s impressive impact in Spain. Since arriving from Atalanta in a deal worth around €35m, the Nigerian has become one of Diego Simeone’s most effective attacking options, contributing goals, assists and big-game performances.
Lookman’s direct running and eye for goal were central to Atlético’s deep runs in both the UEFA Champions League and the Copa del Rey, where he struck crucial goals against Barcelona. His versatility across the front line has made him a key figure in Simeone’s evolving attack.
That importance is precisely why Galatasaray expect negotiations to be difficult. Atlético have already seen Antoine Griezmann depart and are managing uncertainty around the futures of Julian Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth. Allowing another frontline player to leave would risk destabilising a squad already in transition.
Beyond Atlético’s sporting concerns, the financial equation is complex. Lookman’s salary in La Liga is believed to be significantly higher than the wages Galatasaray pay most of their squad. Matching or improving his current terms would require a carefully structured package, especially with the club already committed to Osimhen’s lucrative deal.
Osimhen’s status in Istanbul, however, gives Galatasaray hope. The striker has developed a strong bond with the club and its supporters since his initial loan move, later made permanent in a blockbuster transfer. Club officials believe his voice could carry weight with Lookman, both as a trusted international teammate and as someone who can vouch for life at Galatasaray.
Lookman has been on the radar of several European clubs in recent seasons, including Inter Milan and Fenerbahçe, and is seen as a player entering his peak years. For Galatasaray, landing him would be a statement of intent as they seek to strengthen their attack for domestic and European campaigns.
Whether Osimhen’s intervention can shift the balance remains uncertain. Atlético hold the stronger negotiating position, and any deal will likely hinge on a substantial fee and a salary package capable of tempting Lookman away from a prominent role in Madrid.
