The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has publicly thanked the governors of Abia and Sokoto states, Dr. Alex Otti and Ahmad Aliyu, for their unexpected visit to pro-Biafran leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in prison. This visit is being hailed as a “historic” moment in the ongoing fight for Biafran self-determination.
The statement from IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful slammed the Nigerian government for what they call Kanu's outrageous extraordinary rendition from Kenya and his subsequent imprisonment. Powerful described these actions as nothing short of a blatant provocation against not only IPOB but the entire Igbo community.
Powerful went on to accuse the Federal Government of using state security forces to stage elaborate false-flag operations in the South-East. The aim? To fabricate evidence of violence against IPOB and Kanu. This manipulation of the legal system is being framed as a desperate attempt to silence a leader whose only crime seems to be advocating for the rights of his people.
Highlighting the injustice faced by Kanu, the statement demanded an independent investigation into his treatment. “To the worldwide family and movement of IPOB, we appreciate the surprise visit by Dr. Alex Otti and Ahmad Aliyu to our beloved Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a prisoner of conscience,” it emphasized, framing the visit as a bold act of defiance against a tyrannical regime.
IPOB also recognized the support from other concerned citizens, including Igbos in Sokoto, asserting that the relentless saga surrounding Kanu’s imprisonment, including his kidnapping and unfair trial, will not go unchallenged. In a dramatic assertion, they claimed, “To Ndigbo and many aware Nigerians, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is still a casualty of a tyrannical regime.” The narrative is clear: Kanu is a political martyr in a battle against oppression.
Despite facing numerous hurdles, IPOB maintains that it is unwavering in its quest for justice. “Kanu is beloved by over 90 percent of Ndigbo and numerous well-meaning Nigerians and foreigners. If the government thinks that moving him to Sokoto will deter us, they are sorely mistaken,” Powerful declared.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to a non-violent approach in their quest for Biafran self-determination and called on the Federal Government to ensure Kanu's safety. They are calling for a United Nations-supervised referendum so that Biafrans can determine their future within Nigeria.
To wrap it up, IPOB once again expressed gratitude to Abia Governor Dr. Alex Otti and Sokoto Governor Ahmad Aliyu for their visit to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whom they label a political prisoner. “Thank you to all freedom advocates who stood by our leader in Sokoto prison. May God bless you,” the statement concluded, amplifying the call for solidarity in the face of perceived tyranny.
