As a radiography student at the College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, I am deeply saddened by the recent fire that devastated the Physiology Department building on November 21, 2024. This tragic event not only destroyed valuable academic resources but also disrupted the educational pursuits of many students and faculty members.

It is particularly disheartening to note that the absence of adequate firefighting facilities contributed to the complete destruction of the building. Reports indicate that the fire spread rapidly, and despite efforts from those present, it could not be controlled in time to prevent the loss.

This incident underscores a significant gap in our campus's fire safety preparedness. To prevent such occurrences in the future, the following measures should be considered:

1. Installation of Fire Safety Equipment: Ensure that all campus buildings are equipped with functional fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems. Regular maintenance checks should be conducted to guarantee their operability.

2. Regular Fire Drills and Training: Organize periodic fire drills and training sessions for students and staff to familiarize them with evacuation procedures and the proper use of firefighting equipment. A study highlighted the importance of regular fire drills and training in enhancing fire safety management in educational institutions.

3. Clear Signage and Accessible Exits: Install clear fire exit signs and ensure that evacuation routes are unobstructed. This will facilitate quick and orderly evacuations during emergencies.

4. Electrical Safety Audits: Conduct regular inspections of electrical systems to identify and rectify potential hazards, such as faulty wiring or malfunctioning equipment, which are common causes of fires.

5. Establishment of a Campus Fire Safety Committee: Form a dedicated committee responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring fire safety policies and procedures across the campus.

Implementing these measures will not only enhance the safety of our campus community but also protect valuable assets and ensure the continuity of academic activities. It is imperative that the university administration takes proactive steps to address these concerns and prevent future tragedies.
