All about the versatility.
In a city where the subway wind can undo an outfit in seconds, tops are my secret weapon. I am a mom of two, a fashion publicist who spends her days racing between the Coach office, press previews, and school pickup, and I rely on a tight edit of chic, hardworking tops to keep me looking pulled together with both jeans and tailored trousers.
New York’s weather rarely cooperates. One hour it is blazing sun, the next it is a downpour, and the office air-conditioning is always set to arctic. Dresses can feel like a gamble. A great top, on the other hand, can be layered, reworked, and reimagined across seasons. It is the piece that lets me move from a morning meeting to a late dinner without changing my entire outfit.
For summer, I live in halter tops that skim the body without feeling fussy. I will throw one on with vintage straight-leg jeans and leather sandals for the commute, then add a sharp blazer or denim jacket once I am at my desk. With white linen trousers and a red lip, the same top suddenly feels like evening wear.
Button-downs are my year-round backbone. In warm months, I look for airy cotton or linen in slightly oversized cuts. I wear them French-tucked into dark denim for the office, fully tucked into pleated trousers for presentations, and open over a tank on weekends. They are the rare piece that works as a shirt, a light jacket, and even a beach cover-up.
Then there are the statement pieces: a gingham jacket I insist on styling as a top, ruffled blouses that feel romantic but not precious, and floral prints that instantly lift my mood on gray mornings. I balance their personality with clean, minimal bottoms so the look stays polished, not costume-y.
Two categories I will never abandon are the classic black top and the crisp white one. A black top, whether it is a sleek knit or a sculpted camisole, anchors everything from slouchy jeans to wide-leg trousers. A white top, especially with lace or eyelet details, brings lightness and texture that works just as well with blue denim as with sharp suiting.
For me, versatility is not a buzzword; it is survival. The right tops let me move through my day—school run, boardroom, dinner reservation—without ever feeling like I am in the wrong outfit.
