Betrayal - 12 months ago

What does it mean to fall apart, to lose everything that you once were? Joshua stood at the door of his living room I'm utter disbelief. He couldn't even remember how long he had been standing there, all he remembered was coming home from a long day of work to find his wife breaking his heart.

It doesn't take much to break a person's heart. It's not as dramatic as the movies make it seem, all those heartbreak songs make it sound much more complicated than it actually is.

All you need to do is take away trust.

Joshua's father once told him that trust was the glue that kept two people together. His wife had successfully washed away that glue.

Up till now, it had been a silent conversation with Joshua staring into space and Ruth pleading silently. She was still on the couch - the scene of the crime. Joshua had to know though.

“Why?” He whispered. It was a broken sound. The sound of a man that had something precious taken away from him.

Ruth's mouth opened to answer, but no words came out. She licked her lips, eyes darting across the room as she tried to find the right words.

Joshua waited patiently.

“I-” she stammered. “I don't know. I had to.”

Joshua closed his eyes, trying to shut out the pain. “It's not that simple, Ruth,” His voice came out barely above a whisper and Ruth had to lean forward to hear him.

Nine years. They had been married for nine years and they had a son! How could one woman cause so much pain?

"Where's Anthony?"

Ruth had to take a moment to think. Had she already picked him up from school? She couldn't remember.

“He- He's upstairs.” She said at last, hoping for the best.

Joshua stomped away from the door towards the staircase. He could stand to look at the woman before him any longer.

“I'm sorry!” Ruth called after him. The guilt eating her insides like a cancer till she had no peace left.

Joshua paused. “You promised. We had an agreement, or does that not mean anything to you?” He hissed at her.

Upstairs, Joshua found his seven year old son sitting and playing with plastic building blocks. For a while, Joshua stood silently watching the innocent child who was completely unaware of the betrayal taking place a few metres away from him downstairs. Joshua didn't want to disturb him, but Anthony, like any other seven year old child, had a kind of radar for when his parents were close by.

He turned around and shit his father a heart melting smile.

“Daddy!” He screamed, running into his arms. Joshua dropped to one knee and caught the boy in a hug. When he pulled away, Joshua looked his son in the eyes and asked his son the inevitable - “How long has mommy been watching ‘Suits’?

Anthony tilted his head, trying to think.

“Mommy's been watching for a long time.”

Joshua's eyes went to the clock on the wall. It was 5:43. 'A long time' meant Ruth had been on that couch since she picked Tony up around 12 noon. How far had she gone? They were supposed to watch episode three of season two together, but only God knew where she was now.

Letting Anthony go, Joshua stomped back downstairs, glaring daggers at his so-called wife.

“What episode are you in?”

The colour drained from Ruth's face as she replied, “Eight.”

The answer made Joshua stagger backwards a few steps.

“Come on, Ruth!”

“I'm sorry! You can come sit and watch. I'll go back with you.”

After considering it for a few seconds, Joshua sulked to the couch and plopped himself beside his wife. He kicked his work shoes off his feet and loosened his tie. Ruth tucked her feet beneath her, both of them getting comfortable.

“I'm still mad at you.” Joshua mumbled

“Okay, big guy.” Ruth returned with a knowing grin as she pressed ‘play’ on the TV remote.
