Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding at the Murtala Muhammed International
Airport's temporary terminal in Lagos on Sunday, forcing an abrupt shutdown and triggering an emergency relocation of all airlines mid-operation.
FAAN spokesperson Henry Agbebire attributed the flooding to ongoing reconstruction of the old MMIA terminal by a Chinese contractor, which temporarily disrupted the airport's drainage system. He said no flights were cancelled and that all airlines had been successfully moved to Terminal 2.
The flooding submerged the departure hall, boarding gates and airline offices, rendering the facility completely non-operational. The terminal's powerhouse was also affected, forcing a total electricity cut. The incident has renewed concerns about infrastructure resilience at Nigeria's busiest international gateway.
