A day in the life of an exhausted literary scholar constantly being dragged through unexpected plot twists.
Yesterday, I stood unusually close to covenant.
Close enough to hear two trembling voices exchange marriage vows at the altar.
My existence felt like an even more evidence because I was the one that held up the microphone between as they promised forever to each other.
I have never been that close to a wedding ceremony before.
And, I also accidentally signed myself up to appear in almost 70% of the wedding pictures despite never having spoken to the bride before – I don't know her 🙂
Then it was time for celebration and I attempted to dance with joints that clearly did not rehearse for such movement.
Shortly after, I became an emergency DJ for the wedding reception.
Everything was going smoothly until I clicked a WhatsApp video status forgetting that my phone was now public property!
And the first loud voice that echoed through the speakers was:
“YOU HAVE TO BE A MAN—”
I nearly disappeared from the earth.
I immediately removed it, switched my phone to airplane mode and silenced every possible notification like my life depended on it.
One hour later, I was still searching for song after song fighting for my life behind the DJ table, me that my playlists consisted of soft instrumentals and calming nature sounds, finding the perfect song for a Pastor and Prophetess getting married wasn't exactly an ideal task to be assigned to on a Saturday afternoon.
Phew, but we made it, my friend cam to help me out and she immediately started browsing through TikTok and suggesting musics.
Finally escaped to get a drink after the reception ended – because non reached me.
Only to meet my lecturer across the road.
What was supposed to be a quick greeting turned into an almost one-hour roadside lecture because every time it seemed like he was concluding, he discovered a new beginning.
But he gave me a few great ideas for my content.
I reluctantly excused myself because I was actually headed somewhere before being academically kidnapped.
I was even wondering in my mind ‘sir did you not have somewhere you were headed to before you saw me?’
Because he didn't look like he minded spending a few hours by the road talking to me.
Then I returned, narrated everything to my friend, and laughed at me, somehow that turned into another long conversation that stretched late into the night.
And that was my yesterday.
I left home as a normal human being.
Life returned me as a side character in seven different genres.
