MORE THAN MY INSECURITIES - Yesterday

CHAPTER TWO

Years passed quickly.

The shy SS1 girl had grown older, but Amara still struggled with low self-esteem. Soon, a new chapter of her life was about to begin.

After months of studying and preparing, she finally wrote her JAMB examination. Not long after, she received the news she had been waiting for she had been admitted into the university to study Theatre Arts.

Even though Amara was shy and insecure, she had still chosen Theatre Arts.

When she stared at her admission letter, she could hardly believe it. She felt happy, yet a part of her was deeply worried. The insecurities she had always struggled with still lived inside her, and she feared they might cause her even more problems in the university.

When it was time for Amara to leave for school, her parents gave her words of advice and encouragement.

“Amara,” her father said gently, “as you go to the university, you will meet many kinds of people

the rich, the poor, the arrogant, the calm, and the good. You must learn to love yourself. Do not be desperate for people to love you, because some people will take advantage of that.”

Amara nodded softly. But deep down, she knew that being confident would not be easy for her.

On the day she arrived at the university, Amara stood quietly in front of the school gate. She looked around and watched students walking confidently across the campus, talking, laughing, and going about their business. A wave of fear and anxiety filled her heart. She did not know exactly how to feel, but one thing was certain she already felt small among all the confident faces she saw.

Taking a deep breath, she gathered a little courage and entered a keke that took her to the Faculty of Arts. When she arrived, she slowly stepped out and walked into the faculty building.

Amara entered a lecture room and quietly took a seat at the back. She was not sure if the students there were in the same level as her, but she was too shy to ask anyone.

Gradually, the classroom became crowded. Students continued to walk in until the room was almost full. Soon, a lecturer entered the class and began teaching.

After a while, the lecturer suddenly stopped and looked directly at Amara.

“You there,” he said, pointing at her. “Are you sure you are in this department? What level are you, and what course do you study?”

Amara felt her heart beating faster as every eye in the room turned toward her.

“I… I’m in hundred level, sir,” she replied softly. “Theatre Arts.”

The lecturer frowned slightly.

“Well, you are in the wrong class,” he said. “These are 200-level students. You are not supposed to be here.”

Amara’s heart sank immediately.

A few students in the class began to laugh quietly.

Feeling the weight of their eyes on her, she slowly stood up and walked out of the classroom, her head bowed in shame.
