Spotify Is Introducing A New “Verified By Spotify” Badge In An Effort To Help Listeners Distinguish Human Artists From - 1 month ago

The badge, which appears on artist profiles and next to names in search results, is designed to signal that an account represents a real, verifiable human artist with an active career. To qualify, artists must demonstrate a clear presence both on and off Spotify. That includes elements such as tour dates, merchandise, and linked social media accounts, all of which help confirm that there is a person and a career behind the music.

Spotify is also looking for sustained listener engagement rather than viral spikes. The company says it is prioritizing artists whose profiles show consistent interest over time, reflecting genuine fan bases instead of one-off trends or algorithmic flukes. Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated music or AI persona projects are explicitly excluded from verification.

At launch, Spotify says more than 99 percent of artists that users actively search for will carry the new badge. Many of these are independent acts across a wide range of genres, regions, and career stages, underscoring the platform’s reliance on smaller artists as well as global stars.

Because of the sheer volume of profiles on the service, verification will roll out gradually. Spotify stresses that the absence of a badge does not mean an artist is ineligible; it may simply indicate that their profile has not yet been reviewed or that they are still building the activity needed to qualify.

The company is also drawing a line between artists and what it calls “functional music” creators, whose output is optimized for background listening, such as focus or sleep playlists. While that content will remain on the platform, Spotify says its verification efforts will focus on artists with active fan communities and recognizable contributions to music culture.

Alongside the badge, Spotify is testing a new profile section that highlights career milestones, release history, and touring activity. This feature is intended to give listeners a quick snapshot of an artist’s real-world footprint, even if they have not yet received verification.

The move follows mounting concern over low-quality AI-generated tracks and impersonators. Spotify has already begun testing tools that let artists review releases before they appear on their profiles, aiming to prevent unauthorized or misleading uploads. With AI now responsible for a significant share of new music on rival platforms, Spotify’s verification push is an attempt to restore trust in the connection between artist and audience.
