A Nigerian scholar, Dr Dorcas Akanbi, has drawn widespread admiration after graduating from a Russian medical school with a stellar 4.90 out of 5.00 cumulative grade point average and delivering the class valedictory address in fluent Russian.
Akanbi, who previously studied at the University of Lagos before continuing her medical education in Russia, emerged as one of the best graduating students in her cohort. Her academic performance placed her among the top performers of the institution, capping years of rigorous training in a demanding programme.
In a post shared on X, she announced her induction into the medical profession, reflecting on a journey that took her from Nigeria to Eastern Europe. She wrote that the path had taken her “from breaking news to viral moments” and expressed gratitude for what she described as a divinely guided achievement.
A follow-up post featured a video of her valedictory speech, delivered entirely in Russian to an audience of fellow graduates, faculty members, university officials, family and friends. Speaking confidently at the podium, she paid tribute to her classmates, thanked the academic staff and highlighted the resilience required to complete medical training far from home.
The video quickly gained traction online, with many viewers praising not only her academic excellence but also her mastery of the Russian language. Commenters noted how seamlessly she switched between cultures, describing her as a powerful example of Nigerian talent thriving on the global stage.
Overwhelmed by the volume of congratulatory messages, Akanbi later returned to X to acknowledge the support. She said she was “physically incapable” of responding to every message but stressed that she felt deeply grateful and honoured “to be a Nigerian and wear my identity proudly.”
Her story has since been widely shared across social media platforms, where users have hailed her as an inspiration to young Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. Many highlighted her success as evidence that, with determination and support, students can excel academically and integrate linguistically in some of the world’s most competitive learning environments.
