Barcelona Goalkeeper Hierarchy:Assessment Of Ter Stegen’s Future - 2 months ago

Barcelona’s goalkeeping structure has undergone a significant change following the appointment of Hansi Flick as head coach. The club’s recent €25 million acquisition of Joan García from Espanyol has resulted in García being designated as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. This development places Marc-André ter Stegen’s future at the club in question.

Ter Stegen, aged 33, joined Barcelona in 2014 and has since made 422 appearances, winning 17 trophies. His tenure has been marked by consistent performance, but recent injury issues have impacted his availability. In the previous season, Ter Stegen made only nine appearances due to a knee injury and subsequently underwent back surgery, causing him to miss the start of the current campaign.

Upon returning to full fitness, Ter Stegen has not regained his starting position. García has started the last two matches, relegating Ter Stegen to the bench. This situation is particularly relevant given Ter Stegen’s objective to secure a place in Germany’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

In a recent press conference, Flick addressed Ter Stegen’s status, stating that the decision regarding his future rests with the player. Flick acknowledged Ter Stegen’s abilities and contributions but emphasized that the choice to remain or seek a transfer is a personal one for the goalkeeper.

Despite Ter Stegen’s historical contributions, current team selection is based on recent performance and fitness. There is no guarantee that Ter Stegen will participate in the upcoming Copa del Rey match against Guadalajara. García will be rested for the fixture, but Flick has not confirmed whether Ter Stegen or Wojciech Szczesny will start in goal.

Flick reiterated the current hierarchy, stating that García is the first-choice goalkeeper. Szczesny, who contributed to three title wins last season and provided stability during García’s injury absence, remains an important squad member both on and off the pitch.

Barcelona will enter the Copa del Rey in the round of 32 against Guadalajara, a team that recently eliminated AD Ceuta. Flick highlighted the necessity of maintaining focus and the correct mentality against lower-league opposition, especially as Barcelona currently leads LaLiga with seven consecutive wins and a seven-point advantage over Real Madrid.

Flick’s comments indicate that team selection and performance are being evaluated on current form and readiness rather than past achievements. As Barcelona approaches a critical phase in both domestic and cup competitions, Ter Stegen faces a decision: compete for his position at Barcelona or pursue opportunities elsewhere to support his international career objectives.
