Nigeria’s Super Eagles were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after losing to host nation Morocco in a semi-final decided by a penalty shootout on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in Morocco and kicked off at 9:00 p.m. (WAT).
The encounter was contested, with both teams displaying strong defensive organisation and disciplined play throughout the game.
Nigeria, popularly known as the Super Eagles, faced a determined Moroccan side in front of a lively home crowd. Despite several chances created by both teams, neither side was able to score during regulation time.
At the end of 120 minutes, the match remained goalless at 0–0, forcing the game into a penalty shootout.
The tense shootout ended in favour of Morocco, as Nigeria missed crucial kicks that cost them a place in the final.
As a result, Morocco have secured a place in the AFCON final. Nigeria, on the other hand, will compete in the third-place match against Egypt on Saturday.
