Nigerian-British actress Zainab Balogun has set social media on fire, calling out “I Just Got Backs” (IJGBs) for blowing up prices during the notorious “Detty December” holiday stretch. In a dramatic Instagram video, Zainab squarely pointed the finger at returnees from the diaspora, accusing them of fueling sky-high costs for everything from hair braiding to nightlife in Nigeria and Ghana.
“Step forward, all you Detty December IJGBs!” Zainab announced, clearly fed up as she exposed what she claims is ruining the festive season for locals. According to her, these returnees, desperate to show off after their time abroad, are splashing cash and oversharing online. She says it’s turned into a full-blown “monster,” with vendors jacking up prices just to squeeze IJGB wallets.
In her rant, Zainab blasted the trend of IJGBs bragging about cheap services, like $60 braids,a steal compared to London or New York. But she warned that local business owners are wise to the game, hiking prices to ridiculous levels for anyone with an accent and foreign bank card.
Zainab didn’t hold back, sharing a “shocking” story of a friend slapped with an 800,000 naira bill for braids, which ballooned to an eye-watering 2.5 million when “human hair-infused” extensions were added. She insisted, “Locals won’t pay these prices!” and claimed the inflated costs are strictly for the December party crowd, meaning only IJGBs will “chop it.”
Her viral comments have split the internet. Many Nigerians are cheering her on, fed up with being priced out of their own cities every holiday season. Others are defending vendors, saying it’s fair game to cash in when demand is high. The arguments have exploded into a full-blown culture war: diaspora returnees versus locals, with accusations flying about showing off, economic gaps, and social media stunting.
