FG Advances Vaccine Development with mRNA Training for Scientists

The Federal Government has provided training for scientists from key research institutions across Nigeria on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. This effort is part of a larger initiative to enhance local vaccine production and strengthen national capacity in biotechnology and vaccine development.
The training was organized under the Enhancing Local Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management of Malaria Health Commodities Project. This project is a collaboration between the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) and the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), with support from the World Bank-funded IMPACT Project.
The capacity-building initiative focused on key areas of mRNA vaccine development, such as design, synthesis, formulation, delivery systems, and quality control, with a specific emphasis on malaria vaccines. The goal is to prepare Nigeria's biopharmaceutical workforce for future health emergencies and reduce dependence on imported vaccines.
This training will benefit Nigerians by increasing local vaccine production, decreasing reliance on imports, and enhancing the country's ability to respond to disease outbreaks. It will also contribute to malaria prevention efforts, including the distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, while improving health security and access to affordable vaccines.
