Borbe Taken To Hospital As Arsenal Await Update - 2 months ago

Arsenal are anxiously awaiting medical updates on goalkeeper Anneke Borbe after she was taken to hospital following a heavy collision in their dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Corinthians in the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup final at Emirates Stadium.

The incident occurred in the closing moments of the second period of extra time, with Arsenal desperately defending their narrow lead. Borbe came off her line to deal with a late Corinthians attack and collided forcefully with teammate Lotte Wubben-Moy. Play was halted immediately as medical staff rushed onto the pitch.

Borbe received lengthy treatment on the field before being carried off on a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask and neck brace as a precaution. She was replaced by fellow goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, who entered the match under suspected concussion substitution protocols.

Head coach Renee Slegers confirmed after the game that Borbe had been taken to hospital for further assessment. Out of precaution she’s going to the hospital to get checked, and hopefully we will know soon, Slegers said. Her mum was here to support and I spoke to her mum briefly.

Anneke has been so good for us, she’s been fantastic, and it’s unfortunate for her, the situation, and we all hope that she’s going to be alright, Slegers added, underlining the importance of the Germany international to Arsenal’s recent form.

The injury cast a shadow over what had been a landmark night for the club. Arsenal appeared to have secured a 2-1 win and the lucrative first-place prize money before conceding a penalty in second-half stoppage time, allowing Corinthians to force extra time.

In the additional period, forward Caitlin Foord delivered the decisive moment, scoring 14 minutes into the first half of extra time to restore Arsenal’s lead. The goal ultimately sealed the trophy, but celebrations were muted as players and staff focused on Borbe’s condition.

Arsenal will now prioritise Borbe’s recovery while preparing for the rest of their campaign, with the club expected to provide a further update once hospital tests are completed.
