Police in Akwa Ibom State have averted a potential tragedy in Essien Udim Local Government Area after arresting a man who allegedly stormed a traditional ruler’s palace armed with a locally made pistol.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Bassey Udo Idiong, was taken into custody by operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command following a distress call to the Command Control Room in Uyo. Idiong was said to have entered the palace of a community leader and threatened to shoot him.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, officers deployed to the scene acted on credible intelligence and moved swiftly to prevent bloodshed. On arrival, they reportedly confronted the suspect, disarmed him without firing a shot and recovered the locally fabricated pistol as evidence.
John described the operation as another significant success in the Command’s campaign against violent crime and the proliferation of illegal firearms in the state. She noted that the rapid response demonstrated the police’s readiness to act decisively on any credible security threat.
The suspect is currently being held in police custody while investigators probe the source of the weapon, his motive for the alleged attack and the possibility of a wider criminal network. Detectives are also working to determine whether Idiong has been involved in previous incidents of violence or intimidation within the community.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, has commended the officers involved for their professionalism and restraint, stressing that their conduct prevented what could have been a fatal confrontation inside the palace.
Azare reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and targeted operations aimed at mopping up illegal arms and dismantling gangs involved in violent crime across Akwa Ibom. He warned that there would be no hiding place for individuals or groups seeking to undermine the peace and security of the state.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious movements or threats to the nearest police formation, assuring that all information would be treated with strict confidentiality. He emphasised that community cooperation remains critical to sustaining recent gains in crime prevention and ensuring that traditional institutions and other vulnerable targets are adequately protected.
Police said Idiong will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
