For the longest time, I believed happiness had to be something big.
A better job.
More money.
A bigger house.
The perfect relationship.
I kept telling myself, “I'll be happy when I finally get there.”
But somewhere along the way, I realized I was rushing past the very moments that made life worth living.
One evening, after what felt like the longest day, the electricity went out. There was nothing to distract me—no television, no endless scrolling, no noise.
I stepped outside.
The air was cool after a light rain. Children were laughing as they chased each other down the street. A woman nearby was humming while preparing dinner. The sky slowly turned shades of orange and purple as the sun disappeared.
For a few minutes, everything felt... enough.
Nothing extraordinary had happened.
I hadn't won an award.
I hadn't received life-changing news.
The world hadn't suddenly become perfect.
Yet, I felt a kind of peace I hadn't experienced in a long time.
That's when it hit me.
Life isn't only made beautiful by the big milestones we spend years chasing.
It's also found in the smell of fresh food filling the kitchen.
In a genuine laugh that makes your stomach hurt.
In hearing your favorite song at the right moment.
In a phone call from someone who simply wanted to know how you were doing.
In watching the rain from your window.
In sharing a meal with people you love.
In finally getting a full night's sleep after a stressful week.
In quiet mornings before the world wakes up.
We often overlook these moments because they don't look spectacular.
But one day, when we look back on our lives, they may be the moments we miss the most.
Maybe happiness isn't waiting for us at the finish line.
Maybe it's been walking beside us all along, hidden inside the ordinary.
So today, slow down.
Take a deep breath.
Look around.
There is probably something simple, ordinary, and beautiful happening right in front of you.
What's one small thing that made you smile today?
