Shrek's long-awaited return has been confirmed, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz all set to reprise their roles in the first new film featuring the lovable green ogre in 16 years.
While the plot for the upcoming movie is still under wraps, Myers will return as the title character Shrek, Diaz will voice Shrek’s wife Princess Fiona, and Murphy will return as the hilarious sidekick Donkey.
DreamWorks Animation announced the news on X, stating: "Not too Far, Far Away... Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz."
The original film, released in 2001, was a massive success, winning the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and grossing $487 million worldwide. The franchise continued with Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek The Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010.
Shrek 5 will be the seventh installment in the broader franchise, following two spin-off films featuring Antonio Banderas' character, Puss In Boots, and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. It is currently unknown whether Banderas will reprise his role in Shrek 5.
Eddie Murphy hinted in an interview with Collider last month that Donkey might also get his own spin-off movie. He mentioned that work on Shrek 5 had already begun "months ago."
"I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year; we’ll finish it up," Murphy said. "Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie."
Fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting more details as the release date approaches, excited to see their favorite characters back on the big screen.
