Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to US President Donald Trump and senior director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council, has claimed that US forces killed 199 jihadists during a single operation in Nigeria.
Gorka made the remarks in an interview with Marissa Streit, CEO of PragerU, which aired on June 24, while discussing the Trump administration's counterterrorism strategy.
According to Gorka, the operation was recently declassified and reflected the administration's approach of targeting threats rather than engaging in nation-building.
He said President Trump sends a clear message to groups that threaten Americans or target Christians because of their faith, adding that he watched the Nigeria operation unfold live from the White House Situation Room.
Gorka described the mission as the largest single neutralisation of jihadists since the September 11, 2001, attacks, saying 199 militants were killed in one operation.
Although he did not identify the exact mission, the claim comes against the backdrop of previous joint operations by US and Nigerian forces against ISIS-affiliated militants and ISWAP fighters in the Lake Chad Basin.
He also revealed that the operation yielded a massive cache of electronic intelligence, requiring an additional aircraft to transport the recovered materials. According to him, the intelligence haul was three times larger than any similar seizure made since 9/11 and is expected to provide valuable insight into how ISIS communicates and operates.
Gorka concluded by saying Africa has become a major focus in the global fight against terrorism, citing the expansion of extremist groups across the continent and stressing the importance of strengthening US security partnerships in the region.
