The 30th of May-5th ofJune 2024 was a horrible period for students of Unilorin( popularly called the ‘Better by Far’ University) residing on Campus. Having stable electricity used to be a thing of pride and often raised bants between on Campus residents and their counterparts who stay off campus and have persistent light issues.

It started one Faithful Thursday afternoon , the 30th of May 2024 to be precise. The light went off when it was threatening to rain. Everyone thought that it would be business as usual and that the light would be restored after the rain subsided. Eyebrows only begun to get raised after even though it didn’t end up raining, power supply wasn’t restored after 24 hours. Students began grumbling, little did they know that the worse had only just begun. By Saturday, frustration was evident in the air. Phones, Laptops and Powerbanks had all run down, hostels no longer had Water, nobody was prepared. We were all caught off guard. Occupants of Hostels whose managements refused to put on Generators for few hours at night were going through the most. To top it all, it was like the Students’ Union Executives had gone mute. There was no word from them, no explanation was given. Unilorites were losing it by Monday morning. Students had to show up for classes with rumpled clothes and dead devices. Those who had tests that week had to prepare under such unfavourable conditions; struggling to find places to fetch water and charge their devices and still read to pass.

By Tuesday, when it looked like all hope was lost, the Students’ Union finally spoke up, assuring Unilorites that Power would be restored soon. ‘Soon’ wasn’t the expected word, ‘Now’ would have been preferably. Statuses were constantly flooded with complaints. Off Campus residents saw it as an opportunity to exert revenge and bant On Campus residents because suprisingly, they had light during the period.nTensions were high, it was very easy for arguments to break out as students were irritated. Hostels were a sight for sore eyes with the endless trails of muddy shoes because of residents adventures of going outside to get water. There were also those who started developing reactions to the change in sources of water. It seemed like there was no end to the agony!

Finally, on Wednesday the 5th of June, power supply was restored after a whole week of suffering. It was a relieve to see light and have water again. On Campus residents could only hope that affliction would not arise for the 2nd time.

Whether it does or doesn’t, that week will not be forgotten in a hurry as a Strange Week in the University.
