Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has reaffirmed her ambition to govern Ogun State after a high-profile meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos, describing the encounter as a boost to her consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obasanjo, a former Ogun State Commissioner for Health and one-time senator representing Ogun Central, is seeking the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress. She said her discussion with Tinubu focused on leadership, governance and the future of both Nigeria and Ogun State.

According to her, the meeting was “insightful and forward-looking,” offering an opportunity to engage the president on how to deepen democratic governance and accelerate development. She praised Tinubu’s “lasting commitment” to nurturing the next generation of political leaders and strengthening democratic institutions.

Positioning herself as an experienced hand in Ogun politics, Obasanjo stressed that her long involvement in public service has equipped her with a clear understanding of the state’s needs. She argued that Ogun now requires leadership that combines familiarity with local realities and the capacity to deliver tangible results.

Obasanjo outlined her priorities should she emerge as governor, pledging to focus on education, healthcare and job creation. She said her vision is for an Ogun State where schools “produce future leaders,” health facilities can adequately serve citizens, and young people have access to meaningful employment.

She framed her bid as a continuation of ongoing consultations with stakeholders across the state, promising to run a people-centred administration anchored on integrity and experience. Every part of Ogun, she said, must feel the impact of government through improved infrastructure, social services and economic opportunities.

Her emergence in the race adds a prominent name to what is expected to be a competitive contest to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun. As the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a politician with legislative and executive experience, Iyabo Obasanjo is likely to be a significant figure in the unfolding political calculations within the APC in Ogun State.
