The students of the department of mass communication, University Of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) laments over the sudden changes in the academic curriculum implemented by the school authority.
During an interactive session with UCJ-UNN reporters on Thursday, June 20, 2024, 100 level students of the department, who were the most affected by the changes, lamented on how they are facing challenges coping with the sudden introduction of new courses. They were concerned about how it would impact their learning and if they would be able to cope with the additional workload, considering how short the semester is.
The 100 level class representative, Mr. Favour C. Ago lamented that “in as much as change is inevitable… the change is coming from a higher authority which demands that we must adapt to it. But we as students plead for negotiation.”
He further revealed that most students had bought some text books for some courses which are no longer in the new curriculum. He added that their interest is on how they would be able to survive it, seeing that there were no prior information about these changes and their ripple effects.
“We are faced with stannous adaptability as students are finding it hard to adapt to the new development. Imagine that a new list of students was added from the supplementary list which was released by the University recently and now they are faced with these changes. In all this, I believe that every problem can be negotiated,” Mr Agbo explained.
Additionally, Miss. Praise C. James, the assistant class representative, also complained that the new development will have a huge effect. She said, “this information came like a hard blow on us. We are disorganized at the moment. It’s not really easy on us as we are not sure of the courses we are doing right now. Exams are going to start by July according to the school semester timetable of events and things are going on this way.
“The deed has been done and for that, lecturers should be lenient in the exams because the time is short and they might not cover all the course outlines due to the limited time. It will be helpful if materials will be made available for students to be able to survive the new development,” she pleaded.
