A University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) student was feared dead following a lone accident on campus on Thursday. The accident involved a ten-seater commercial bus transporting passengers from the campus to the town after the day's work.
Kunle Akogun, the director of corporate affairs at UNILORIN, stated that four passengers sustained minor injuries, were treated, and discharged. Five others, including two males, two females, and the driver, are currently receiving treatment at the University Health Centre.
"The management of the University of Ilorin is saddened to announce the occurrence of a motor accident on campus this afternoon," the statement reads. "The lone accident involved a commercial bus with ten passengers leaving the campus."
The University Management promptly initiated rescue operations, moving all victims to the University Health Centre, where they were attended to by medical personnel. One victim, needing advanced treatment, was stabilized and referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
"Four had minor injuries, they were treated and discharged. Five victims, consisting of two males, two females, and the driver, are currently being treated at the University Health Centre," Akogun noted.
Tragically, one victim was brought in dead, and the body has been transferred to the morgue. Efforts are being made to contact the next of kin.
The University Management expressed deep regret over the incident, extended condolences to the deceased's family, and prayed for quick recovery for the injured. The accident, caused by a tyre burst while the bus was in motion, occurred near the main gate of the institution.
