The World Health Organisation has called on governments to take stronger action on mental health, warning that neglect could cost millions of lives and deepen economic strain.
Speaking ahead of the UN High Level Meeting on Non communicable Diseases and Mental Health set for September 25, the Director General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus stressed that mental health must be treated as a global priority alongside other major illnesses.
WHO estimates that with just a small increase in investment, countries could save lives while boosting productivity and economic growth. The organisation urged nations to scale up affordable solutions, including stronger community health systems, early intervention, and stricter controls on harmful products.
The meeting in New York is expected to set new global targets and commitments to tackle both mental health challenges and related non communicable diseases by 2030.
