I will first of all start by saying I'm a newbie at writing. Bearly a year since I started, and it's amazing. When I look at my first published work it makes me laugh. I won't say I'm there yet or anywhere close to it. Though I am grateful I am seeing wins here and there.
When I wanted to start writing and publishing, the first thing I saw was to start a blog. Yeah I did and quickly I noticed it wasn't what I wanted. First, a blog gives me a limited audience. I have to do the marketing especially If you are or were like me who used a free account. Specifically I was publishing on WordPress.
What's a blog? A blog is a page on the internet that few people know about, and has limited coverage unless you are using SEO to upscale the blog.
Social media? Platform where content creator, and consumers meet regularly.
On X the more you engage people's content, the algorithm grants you more people to reach. So let's say your first comment got two hundred views, The more you engage, the algorithm rewards you by putting your comments in front that give it more exposure. One thing you didn't do was change your approach. Do what you always did.
Now you are posting content on the same platform, let's use X. They upscale your reach for you. Maybe you just engage other people's content, that's all.
I must state I have nothing against word press. Though if you are writing, you want your audience to know not some friends and family and that's if they care to read. You are looking for a great wide audience range. People you can learn from. In fact you are looking for a community and that's what a blog is not.
When it comes to writing and publishing online. The best step I took, has to be going for social platforms.
Most notably medium since that is where I do most of my writing. Platforms like X , Quora and LinkedIn all these Platforms are looking for generic content. And you allow them to take it to the audience for you. So you really don't need to share links. Just post and engage other people's content and be active in the community. Just do you and let the algorithm sort out the rest.
While writing on medium which is a platform for writers, by writers and with writers in mind. If you are not generating content on medium and just a passive user you won't enjoy the platform.
Recently I engaged a user on medium and shared my view about the topic he was talking about. The reaction I got from the community was lovely. Let me avoid exaggeration. Well, people shared my view. And I could get that feedback because of social platforms like that. Some blogs won't really allow me to enjoy them.
Posting your content on social media or platforms allows you to learn and gain feedback from others, it also connects you with experts in a field your niche might be focused on. Let's say you are writing and publishing things around copywriting, ghost writing etc. platforms like LinkedIn connect you with industry leaders.
I'm not an expert. If you want to learn more do twell check out someone with results from applying social media as his own writing community. Nicholas Cole on X, medium, LinkedIn and YouTube to learn more about this style of writing and its benefits.
