Course Code: MCom 110

Course Title: Computer For Mass Communication

Reg number: U25MM1057

Topic: Cybersecurity

Introduction

For this assignment, I used different advanced search techniques to search for information on cybersecurity. These search techniques helped me get more accurate, relevant, and reliable information than a normal Google search. I also compared the results from each search to understand how each technique works.

Advanced Search Technique 1: filetype:pdf

Search Query

Cybersecurity filetype:pdf

Why I Used It

I used the filetype:pdf search operator because I wanted to find cybersecurity information in PDF format. PDF documents are usually lecture notes, research papers, reports, and official publications that contain detailed information.

What I Found

The search returned many PDF documents on cybersecurity from universities, government agencies, and organizations. The results included lecture notes, cybersecurity handbooks, and educational materials. This made it easier to access detailed and downloadable information.

What I Learned

Using filetype:pdf helps me find academic and professional documents instead of ordinary web pages.

Advanced Search Technique 2: intitle:

Search Query

intitle:"Cybersecurity"

Why I Used It

I used the intitle: search operator because it searches for web pages that have the word Cybersecurity in their page title. This helps me find pages that focus mainly on cybersecurity.

What I Found

The search returned websites with Cybersecurity in the title. Most of the results were educational websites, training platforms, and articles explaining cybersecurity, online safety, and cyber threats.

What I Learned

Using intitle: gave me more focused search results because the topic appeared directly in the page title.

Advanced Search Technique 3: inurl:

Search Query

inurl:cybersecurity.gov

Why I Used It

I used the inurl: search operator to search for websites that contain the word cybersecurity in their web address (URL). This helps in finding websites that are directly related to cybersecurity.

What I Found

The search returned official cybersecurity websites, including government agencies and trusted organizations. These websites provide cybersecurity guidelines, best practices, and useful information for internet users.

What I Learned

The inurl: operator helps me find websites that are specifically built around my topic instead of general websites.

Advanced Search Technique 4: site:

Search Query

cybersecurity site:.gov

Why I Used It

I used the site: search operator to limit my search to government websites only. Government websites are trusted sources because they provide verified and reliable information.

What I Found

The search returned results from government websites such as CISA, FTC, and NIST. These websites contain cybersecurity guides, reports, and security tips for individuals and organizations.

What I Learned

The site: operator helped me find reliable information from official government websites without seeing results from other websites.

Advanced Search Technique 5: define:

Search Query

define:cybersecurity

Why I Used It

I used the define: search operator because I wanted to get the meaning of cybersecurity quickly without opening many websites.

What I Found

Google displayed the definition of cybersecurity at the top of the search results. It explained that cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, systems, and data from cyber attacks and unauthorized access.

What I Learned

The define: operator makes it easy to understand the meaning of a word or concept before reading more detailed information.

Conclusion

This assignment helped me understand that advanced search techniques make searching for information easier and more accurate. Instead of using a normal Google search, I learned how to use different search operators to find specific types of information. Each search technique gave different results, but all of them helped me find useful and reliable information about cybersecurity. I also learned that using trusted sources such as government websites, educational materials, and PDF documents improves the quality of information used for research.
