The Comment That Silenced Mr AZ
Frustrated after an online argument, Mr AZ typed out a string of offensive and vulgar comments aimed at humiliating a colleague. He hit “post,” thinking it was nothing more than a heated exchange on social media. But the screenshots travelled faster than he expected, and so did the law.

Under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2025, Online Harassment & Abuse (Section 22) is a punishable offence.

Posting offensive, vulgar, or indecent content with the intent to insult or humiliate others can now land offenders up to 2 years in prison.
What might feel like “just words” online is now treated as a serious violation of dignity and respect. The message is simple: in Nigeria, your keyboard is not a weapon. Use it wisely.
