Wigwe University Opens Its Doors To The Public In August: A New Chapter In Tertiary Education? - 7 months ago

Excitement brews in Nigeria as Wigwe University, established by the late CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, is set to begin operations in August 2024. Located in Isiokpo, Rivers State, the university will offer programs across four major faculties:

  • Management and Social Sciences
  • Arts
  • Science and Computing
  • Engineering.

In January 2024, Professor Miles Davis from the United States was appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor. Davis holds a Doctorate in Human and Organisational Sciences from The George Washington University.

The university's Board of Trustees includes notable figures such as Professor Fabian Ajogwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Ajoritsedere Awosika, and Mrs. Mosunmola Belo-Olusoga. Wigwe University emphasizes delivering programs to an international standard. Collaborating with key international partners to stay updated with world-leading curricula is important to their mission. Also joint research, and international exchange and internship programs are planned.

The university aims to shape Africa’s future by fostering creativity and inspiring well-rounded leaders.

Despite the tragic passing of its founder Herbert Wigwe in a helicopter crash in February 2024, the university remains committed to his vision of empowering youth. Tuition fees vary by college, with the College of Arts being the most affordable at ₦9,600,000, while the tuition fees for other faculties are up to ₦11,998,800. The fee covers comprehensive educational resources and services.

Wigwe’s mission, as articulated on the university’s website, is to empower youth to collectively change the world, reflecting the institution's strong commitment to research, community engagement, and academic excellence.

With the current issues in Nigeria, how feasible will it be for the average Nigerian parent to afford these fees with the minimum wage, electricity tariff and ASUU threatening to go on strike?
