Nigerian security forces clashed with #EndBadGovernance protesters in the Gwagwalada area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on August 1, 2024. The confrontation occurred as demonstrators barricaded the main Lokoja – Abuja Expressway, halting vehicular movement in the area.
The protesters' blockade led to significant disruptions, with some motorists reporting damage to their vehicles around key locations such as Dagiri, Wazobia Park, and SDP Junction along the expressway.
In response to the unrest, a combined force of police, army, civil defense, and local vigilantes was deployed to prevent further breakdown of law and order. Nigerian troops and police had already tightened security in Lagos and Abuja in anticipation of protests over the rising cost of living. The country is grappling with soaring inflation and a devalued naira following economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a year ago aimed at reviving the economy.
