When Custodians Of The Law Break The Law - 2wks ago

Every nation has its laws. But what happens when the custodians of the law break them.

Welcome to Nigeria. A nation where the law favors the highest bidder.

Where the directives of Superiors are given no regard.

The Nigerian police gave it's officers a directive "don't search the phones of citizens".

Like most of the laws, the implementation is our problem as a nation.

Well that was my experience with the Nigerian police, after they stopped me  while on transit for a "stop and search".

Let's be sincere these  guyz were just hustling on the street.

Because if you're caught with something, some few naira notes can fix it.

However, this individual writing had nothing on him.  So "bad market be dat".

Secondly no way on earth would they get me to give them money.

Officer: won't you drop, go to Hilux pointing at the car close to the round about

Me: Rushes to the car, and greets the officer in the car. A young dude so I switched to speaking pidgin.

Officer: enter the car. How you dey?

Response: I dey boss how fa? How work? While opening my phone.

Already their was this young guy inside the car. I could see his hands shake as he gave the officer his I.D

Me: Hands the police my phone_ I know some of you are like "why you give am"?

Lmao 😂😂. My mind was calculating the chances of me getting shot if I start talking about my rights. I could see the placard " He died for his right"😂

The discussion that followed, was pretty easy, telling him how I knew he was doing his job. Joint with stroking his ego.

Then he asked if I'm a "barrack boy". Thank God for learning things you don't even need to know.

Finally he advised me to hold my I.D on me always.

Well that  was what saved me. 'Cause he bearly looked at my phone and told me to leave.

Mind you my system was with me and he didn't even look at it.

Well what happened was, I had to speak the police mans language with small flattery. Not the thug like "officer officer" thing.

Instead we started talking about Police academy  and the chances that he's undercover and his rank out weighted what he was having.

Sorry for the long story. But that's a reality many youths face  in Nigeria. Many people see where the law favors the highest bidder.

A society plagued by institutional injustice.

Welcome to Nigeria, where the police can be used as thugs no wonder a soldier said "I will be speaking and a police will be speaking" .

Welcome to Nigeria a society where making of laws is easy. Because the implementation will fail.

Where the law has a double standard.

Two men charged for one crime can get two different verdicts.

For instance Namdi Kanu gets life in prison- while a boko Haram terrorist gets 20 years.

In Nigeria, ignorance of the law- and knowledge of the law can change if you have money to spear.

If the law must be regarded by citizens then. Political leaders, VIPs and the custodians of the law must be seen to regard the law.

Part2 coming soon.
