In a shocking twist that has left many gasping, the management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi State, alongside its alumni association and staff unions, is up in arms against a brazen initiative from the Senate aimed at transforming the university from a prestigious technology institution into just another run-of-the-mill conventional university.
In a dramatic statement to the press, the university’s Registrar, Kabiru Garba, laid bare his disbelief over the complete lack of consultation regarding this legislative chaos. Garba expressed his shock, stating, “We just woke up one morning to hear in the media that a motion has been presented at the Senate chambers to change the establishment laws of the University. It came to us as a shock and surprise!” Where’s the transparency? Where's the respect for the institution's legacy?
Garba revealed that vital administrative bodies like the University Senate and the Governing Council were completely sidelined in these discussions! “As of this moment, there has not been any official communication to the University Management or the community. I am appalled!” he exclaimed, emphasizing that he, as the Registrar, had not been contacted for input on this monumental decision that could reshape the university's future.
Despite this disheartening turn of events, Garba confirmed that the university management is gearing up to take a stand. They have crafted a position paper ready to present to the powers that be, and they plan to make their voices heard at the upcoming public hearing. Will they be able to save ATBU from this impending doom?
Joining the chorus of disapproval, Mohammed Wada, the National President of the ATBU Alumni Association, slammed the Senate's unprovoked initiative. He boldly asserted that converting ATBU into a conventional university is a reckless move that would undermine its proud achievements as a technology-driven institution. “If you check very well, we have not fewer than eleven conventional universities surrounding ATBU. What then do we need to convert it to another conventional university for?” Wada questioned, raising eyebrows and fueling discontent!
Wada didn't mince words as he urged the senator behind this disaster, Shehu Buba, to redirect his efforts toward improving the university's infrastructure and academic prowess rather than orchestrating this misguided conversion. “He can establish an endowment, build more lecture theatres, buy vehicles, and support other development programmes. His name will be written in gold,” Wada suggested, emphasizing the need for constructive action instead of destructive proposals.
Reports have surfaced that Senator Shehu Buba, representing the Bauchi South Senatorial District, is the mastermind behind this outrageous bill that seeks to strip “Technology” from the institution’s title, effectively diluting its identity and legacy.
The uproar surrounding this legislative assault has sparked vital discussions about ATBU's future and the importance of preserving its status as a bastion of technology and innovation. As stakeholders brace themselves to voice their concerns, the fate of this revered institution hangs in the balance, with many clamoring for a focus on development rather than this reckless conversion.
