AS Monaco are preparing to cut short Paul Pogba’s stay in the principality, with the Ligue 1 club reportedly opening talks to terminate the midfielder’s contract by mutual consent.

Pogba joined Monaco last summer on a two-year deal, a move that marked his return to professional football after serving an 18‑month suspension for a doping violation. The former Juventus and Manchester United star had hoped to rebuild his career in France, but his time at the club has been hampered by persistent injuries and limited appearances.

According to multiple reports, including transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Monaco have formally proposed ending Pogba’s contract ahead of schedule, targeting an agreement before the close of the current transfer window. The club are said to be keen to give the 2018 World Cup winner enough time to find a new team, while reshaping their own midfield options.

The situation has been further complicated by a change in the dugout. New manager Filipe Luis has replaced Sébastien Pocognoli and is expected to remodel the squad to fit his tactical vision. Pogba, currently sidelined through injury, does not appear central to those plans, prompting Monaco’s push for an early separation.

Pogba’s recent career has been overshadowed by his doping case. He initially received a four‑year ban after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone, a banned substance, following a test in August 2023. The midfielder maintained that the result stemmed from an unintentional intake of a contaminated supplement. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later reduced the sanction to 18 months, clearing the way for his return to competitive action in March 2025 and enabling Monaco to sign him.

However, the combination of fitness issues, limited game time and strategic changes at the club now appears to be bringing his Monaco chapter to a premature close. If an agreement is reached, Pogba will become a free agent once more, facing another pivotal decision in a career that has swung between glittering highs and prolonged setbacks.

For Monaco, parting ways would free up salary space and a squad slot as they attempt to remain competitive in Ligue 1 and in European qualification races. For Pogba, it would represent yet another restart, with his next move likely to determine whether he can still salvage a meaningful final act at the top level.
