RSU Unveils N110bn Plan To Rank Among Nigeria’s Top Universities - 3wks ago

Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has unveiled an ambitious N110bn Strategic Development Plan for 2026–2030, setting its sights on becoming one of Nigeria’s foremost universities and a competitive player on the global stage.

The plan was presented at the university’s Convocation Arena during a meeting of the governing council, principal officers, and the wider university congregation. It outlines a comprehensive roadmap to tackle long-standing institutional challenges and reposition RSU for accelerated growth.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Okey Wali (SAN), said the blueprint would only succeed if backed by collective commitment, discipline, accountability, and unity of purpose across the university community. He appealed to the Visitor to the university, donor agencies, friends, well-wishers, and other stakeholders to support the implementation of the plan, expressing confidence that it would lift RSU “to greater heights in the community of higher institutions.”

The document identifies six core challenges confronting RSU, including funding constraints, infrastructure deficits, limited research collaboration, and weaknesses in service delivery. In response, it prioritises strengthening governance and administrative systems while aggressively expanding the institution’s funding base.

Key strategies include deeper alumni engagement, strategic partnerships with industry and development agencies, and innovative fundraising models aimed at ensuring long-term financial sustainability. RSU intends to finance a substantial portion of the N110bn internally, while also drawing on government support, donor funding, alumni contributions, and public-private partnerships.

Modernising physical infrastructure forms another pillar of the plan. The university will upgrade lecture halls and laboratories, expand student accommodation, enhance campus security, and deploy advanced ICT systems to support teaching, learning, and research.

Recognising staff as its most critical asset, RSU is introducing targeted capacity-building programmes, mentorship schemes, and performance management systems to develop a highly skilled and motivated workforce.

The plan also places strong emphasis on research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Proposed measures include curriculum reviews, strengthened industry linkages, and the establishment of innovation incubation centres to translate academic research into practical solutions for economic and social development.

A dedicated Strategic Planning Office will coordinate implementation, backed by a robust monitoring and evaluation framework with clear performance and impact indicators. A mid-term review is scheduled within the first two years to assess progress and recalibrate priorities where necessary.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described the five-year plan as a framework to consolidate RSU’s strengths, address weaknesses, seize emerging opportunities, and mitigate existential threats. Prof Emeritus Joseph Ajienka, who chaired the Strategic Development Planning Committee, said the process was driven by extensive consultations across faculties, departments, satellite campuses, and administrative units, and reaffirms the university’s founding ideals of excellence, creativity, innovation, and inclusivity.
