The Future We Are Risking: Investing in Nigeria’s Young People
Across Nigeria today, a quiet crisis is unfolding among the nation’s youth, whose potential remains underutilised despite their dreams, talents, and determination. This promise is being tested by how we treat our young people.
Nigeria is blessed with a large population of young people with dreams, talents, ideas, and the determination to build better lives. Yet, despite this enormous potential, many young Nigerians are growing up without the opportunities they need to succeed.
The future of Nigeria is not something we will suddenly meet tomorrow. The future is being shaped by what we do with our young people today. If we continue to ignore their struggles, unemployment, poor education, lack of skills, poverty, and limited opportunities, we risk losing a generation that could have contributed greatly to the development of our nation.
Education Must Lead to Opportunity
Education should not end with a certificate. Young people need an education that prepares them for the realities of the economy. Schools should provide practical skills, entrepreneurship training, digital knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
But education alone is not enough. There must also be jobs and opportunities for young people to use what they have learned.
It is painful to see educated young Nigerians searching endlessly for employment while many are forced into survival jobs that do not match their qualifications. We must build an economy where education can lead to meaningful opportunities.
Skills Can Change Lives
Not every young person will follow the same path. Some will become professionals, while others may become entrepreneurs, artisans, farmers, creators, or technology innovators.
That is why investment in vocational and technical skills is important. Young people should have access to affordable training, equipment, mentorship, finance, and markets where they can turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods.
A young person who receives the right support today can become an employer tomorrow.
Rural Youth Must Not Be Forgotten
Investment in young people must reach beyond major cities. Many young people in rural communities face limited access to quality education, electricity, internet services, healthcare, skills training, and employment opportunities.
Their location should not determine their future.
If we want balanced national development, rural young people must be included. Development should reach the communities where opportunities are often hardest to find.
We Must Move Beyond Promises
Young Nigerians do not need speeches alone. They need action.
We need policies that create jobs, support businesses, improve education, expand digital access, strengthen agriculture, encourage innovation, and make it easier for young people to access opportunities.
Government, private organisations, communities, educational institutions, and individuals all have a role to play.
The Future Is Worth Investing In
Every young Nigerian who is given an opportunity is a potential solution to a national problem. A trained young person can create employment. An educated young person can develop new ideas. A supported entrepreneur can build a business. A young farmer can contribute to food security. A young innovator can create technology that improves lives.
We cannot afford to lose these possibilities.
Nigeria's young people are not merely beneficiaries of development. They are partners in building the nation we want.
The question is not whether Nigeria has talented young people. We do.
The real question is whether we are willing to invest in them before their dreams are lost to poverty, unemployment, frustration, and lack of opportunity.
If we invest in young Nigerians today, we invest in the Nigeria of tomorrow. If we neglect them today, we may lose the future we are working so hard to build.
