Brentford have underlined their long-term ambitions by tying down highly rated defender Michael Kayode to a new contract running until 2032, with an option for a further year.

The Italy Under-21 international, who initially arrived from Fiorentina on loan before making the move permanent, has rapidly become one of the cornerstones of Brentford’s evolving squad. His blend of athleticism, defensive discipline and attacking thrust from right-back has made him a standout performer in the Premier League.

Since landing in West London, Kayode has made 56 appearances in all competitions, helping Brentford to a ninth-place league finish and earning a nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award. His first goal for the club, a towering header against Wolves, symbolised both his aerial threat and his growing confidence on English soil.

Head coach Keith Andrews described the extension as a natural reward for a player whose trajectory continues to rise. He praised Kayode’s consistency, mentality and influence in the dressing room, highlighting the defender’s enthusiasm in training and his willingness to embrace the club’s demanding style of play.

Kayode’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he came through the youth ranks at Juventus before making his name with Serie D side Gozzano. A subsequent move to Fiorentina accelerated his development, leading to a Serie A debut and regular appearances, including a role in the club’s run to the UEFA Conference League final.

His progress has not gone unnoticed beyond Brentford. Kayode is now a regular for Italy’s Under-21s and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young full-backs, admired for his recovery pace, timing in the tackle and ability to deliver from wide areas. His long throw-ins have also become a notable weapon, adding another dimension to Brentford’s set-piece threat.

The new deal is seen within the club as both a statement of intent and a protective measure amid interest from bigger sides at home and abroad. By securing Kayode for the long term, Brentford are reinforcing their model of identifying, developing and retaining elite young talent capable of competing with the Premier League’s established powers.
