The One Thing

How finding a single purpose can change everything

BY A. STUDENT  ·  MARCH 2026

Mariam spent three years switching majors. Business. Psychology. Fine Arts. Each semester she started fresh, certain this time was different — and each time, the restlessness returned. Then one afternoon, volunteering at a community kitchen, she looked up from a pot of soup and thought: this is it. Not cooking. Not charity. But the act of feeding someone who was hungry. That was her purpose.

Purpose rarely arrives like a lightning bolt. For most people, it surfaces quietly — in a repeated feeling, a nagging pull, a moment so ordinary it almost gets missed. But experts in psychology agree: finding even one clear purpose can anchor a person's entire life.

"You don't need a hundred reasons to get up in the morning. You need one good one."

Dr. James Okoro, a counselor who works with young adults in University of Ibadan , says the pressure to have it all figured out is itself the problem. "We tell people to find their passion, their calling, their mission — all at once. That's overwhelming. I tell my friends : start smaller. Find the one thing that makes you forget to check your phone."

Mariam is now 24. She runs a small meal program for out-of-school youth in her neighborhood. She still doesn't have a finished degree. But she wakes up with direction — a rare and powerful thing.

Purpose, it turns out, doesn't have to be grand. It doesn't require a title, a platform, or a plan. Sometimes it's a pot of soup. Sometimes it's showing up. And sometimes, one purpose is more than enough.
