For some reason I wasn't able to post all in one go, hmmm, I wonder why 🤔 (just kidding, I know why, I be talkative😭. Blogshop really said “gurrrrl, will you die if you keep it short?”).

Anywaysss, where were we?

Oh right-

***

Nonetheless, Nigerians as the self-liberating individuals they are well known as, often at times, with the increased occurrence of such scenarios, take matters into their hands. Quite a while back, a female citizen driving her private vehicle was almost stopped by these exploitive police officers. Knowing the drill, she wasn’t about to deal with the ‘nonsense’ anymore. She allegedly drove past with speed, causing an inevitable leg injury for one of the officers. She didn’t stop, let alone turn back. This was narrated by an eyewitness, and according to the speculations, this occurrence resulted in shifting focus to commercial drivers and motorcyclists only, while the private cars get a free pass from the ever-oppressing ‘law enforcers’.

Years have passed after the largest protest in Nigerian History; ENDSARS, still many experts and activists assert that justice is yet to be served and the misconduct and disregard of human rights still persist. Experts highlight setting up of highly accountable inspectoral bodies to keep these officers in check and avoid continuous misuse of power and overall misconduct, enforcing stricter punishment on defaulting officers, installing digital security cameras and monitors for acquisition of evidence and overseeing, and ultimately aiding improvement of road safety and security, making the Nigerian roads a little less dangerous by eliminating ‘bad eggs’. As it is, Nigerians shouldn’t always have to resort to violence to get justice, should they?

As the stats have it, about two thirds of the estimated population of Nigeria, across young age groups, have experienced police harassment or known people who have. This is not befitting of Africa’s largest ‘democracy’. Words are easy to say regarding issues of this nature, however, the plain truth in sight is; actions matter. And in this case, actions don’t just matter, they are needed- quite frankly more than ever.

*walks out of the shadows🫠 VOILA!

We've reached the end of yet another P from the P (piece from the past🙂‍↕️). As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts, matter of fact, you can also share your experiences regarding the Nigerian police and security system as a whole. Remember, speaking up is always a good first step, especially against injustice. I stand by that principle a whole lot.

(Oh by the way, remember the contest in which I made it to the finals? Of course I won. First place girly! 🤭)
