Opposite Sides Don’t “attract” - 5 hours ago

I know this sounds absurd but hear me out.

Okay I’ve heard this many times i’m sure you have too and most times they are referring to science but people also use it in the context of relationship. I’m no geek so I’m not going to dwell on the science aspect. I’m also no relationship expert but I’ll dwell on it anyways.

Now opposite attracting had to do with distinct characters coming together. For example, a talkative and reserved, extrovert and Introvert.

While this could come in handy in a relationship and subsequently lead to world peace we are talking ‘attract’ here. To attract means to draw someone or something toward oneself, either physically (like a magnet) or by appealing to emotions, senses, or interest. Ignore the magnet aspect. When we talk attract we are talking first time impression.

When someone says I was attracted to her confidence. Does the person think I like her confidence because I’m timid. I’m attracted to his height because I’m tall or do people think complementary that is like side attracting for example I’m rich so I’m attracted to other rich people, I’m smart so I’m attracted to him because he is smart and I can see us having a very intellectual (probably boring) conversation.

Another way we can see this is when people are getting to know each other they often say we have a lot in common and that is a major green flag. I don’t hear we are opposites a match made in heaven. To be a match you need to actually match! My friend google seems to catch my drift when he says while the popular saying suggests "opposites attract," scientific research and relationship data indicate that similarities are a far stronger predictor of attraction and long-term success. Need I say more? No.

So, opposite attract? It does sound absurd and is it an extent as it still holds true in some cases. But If you want to advise someone, I think like poles attract its of course romantically proven not scientifically.

See you next time with another absurd topic.
