A Channels Television correspondent, Deborah Agbalam, was harassed by thugs while attempting to cover the #EndBadGovernance protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday. The thugs, positioned directly opposite the Federal Secretariat, were intimidating and chasing away protesters. Witnesses reported that two protesters had already been beaten before Agbalam arrived, while police officers stood by and did nothing.

Agbalam was also surrounded and threatened by the thugs, who declared they were there to ensure no protest would occur that day. The Federal Secretariat on the Port Harcourt/Aba express road had been a protest gathering point for the past seven days.

The inaction of over 20 police officers, who witnessed the events but did nothing, raises serious concerns about the security and protection of the right to protest in Rivers State. Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu expressed concern over the incident, promising a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.

Disu, who has visited the protest sites multiple times, has ensured his officers remain professional and maintain peace and orderliness among the protesters. He even offered light refreshments to the peaceful protesters in Port Harcourt as a gesture of appreciation for their law-abiding conduct.

Wednesday marked Day 7 of the nationwide protest, which has turned violent in some northern states of the federation.
