The need for Entertainment has been innate in humans and part of the means to show case it is by expressing it in our culture to not just entertain but enlighten and educate us. Education consist of both the Theoretical and Practical aspect of the learning process.
We the students of the Great Yakubu Gowon University from the Faculty of COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDENTS on the 16th of July 2025 had Cultural Exhibition as a Practical work which constituted our Continuous assessment for , GST 112(General Studies). We were grouped according to our Departments and streamlined to our Programmes where we were given groups by proxy. Our Course Representatives were told to pick Tribes from small folded sheets which contained tribes from the 6 Geo political Zones in Nigeria where the Gbagi, Yoruba, Benin, Igbo, Tiv, Hausa, Calabar and Efik.
The activities, presentations (in dance, food and history) and Dress( embroidery and colours) further broadened my cultural horizon about Nigeria it was so colour with every culture styled gorgeously in fabrics interwoven to represent the diversity yet beauty and unity in Nigeria. The cuisine presented by the students was as accurate as how it's eaten across the cultures, the way the dresses were presented some with shoes while others came barefoot represented how strong even civilization hasn't penetrated into our heritage it was said that even there are festivals most culture still celebrate barefoot a traditional that transcends time, age and even dispensations to come.
Some students presented by showcasing the marriage rites of some cultures, I saw explicitly how much respect is accorded to the fathers of brides across cultures, how brides are given out in marriages and their dressings where each style, embroidery, color and even hairstyle is symbolic to their new transformation.
Personally been a Film and Multi Media student my Department represented the Gbagi Culture which constitute a large population in Niger State from the North Central Geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
We began our journey of Excellence it's a journey of Excellence because my Department is exceptional and known for Only Excellence and Distinction by contributing the sum of N1000( One Thousand Naira each). We then split into Dancers, Presenters, Chefs and The Technical crew who covered our Presentation.
To further represent the cultural heritage of the Gbagi we Liased with some people from the community who came to represent their their style of Dressing We had 2 guys who came in a style that covered only their Male genitals and they held bow and arrows. A group of people from my department were the dancers and Food servers and a lady had a flaming pot on her head a practice that represented an important ritual in their Culture it was for spiritual cleansing and purification, some body designs were also done with chalk and white paints.
In synopsis it was an awesome presentation by different groups The Tiv people danced gracefully by twisting their bodies, the Hausas dressed in Ankara, the Yoruba people presented their cuisine, The Efik people dressed in heavily embroidered dresses and accessories. Nigeria is united with a bond that doesn't discriminate Geographical background.
