Delta Governor’s Aide Slams Chioma Over Grammy Outfit - 2 days ago

A media aide to the Delta State governor, Ossai Success, has sparked controversy online after publicly criticising Chioma Adeleke, wife of Nigerian music star Davido, over the outfit she wore to the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Chioma appeared on the red carpet alongside her husband in a black gown featuring sheer fabric and strategically placed floral cut-outs. The look, in line with global red-carpet trends, quickly drew attention across social media, where images of the couple circulated widely among Nigerian and international audiences.

Ossai, reacting to the outfit on his Facebook page, condemned the choice of dress as inappropriate and unrepresentative of Nigerian cultural values. He argued that Chioma, by opting for a revealing ensemble on such a global stage, failed to project what he described as modesty and decency expected from a prominent Nigerian figure.

He further framed his criticism around the idea of cultural responsibility, insisting that celebrities and their spouses carry a duty to reflect what he called “proper Nigerian culture” when they appear at international events. According to him, Chioma’s look leaned too heavily into Western fashion sensibilities that prioritise exposure over tradition.

Ossai also extended his rebuke to Davido, saying the singer should have played a more active role in influencing his wife’s wardrobe choice. In his view, Davido’s global status and influence make his family’s public image particularly significant, and he suggested that allowing such an outfit amounted to endorsing it.

The comments have fuelled a wider debate on social media about the intersection of culture, personal freedom and celebrity image. While some users echoed Ossai’s concerns about cultural representation and the impact of celebrity fashion on young fans, others defended Chioma’s right to dress as she chooses, arguing that Nigerian culture is not monolithic and continues to evolve.

The incident underscores a recurring tension in Nigeria’s entertainment space, where artists and their families navigate the expectations of a conservative home audience while participating in a global industry that often celebrates bold and unconventional fashion choices.
