A Curse - 12 months ago

Everyone kept telling Pearl how much of a curse she was. But her sister, Summer always told her that she wasn't, and she believed. Of course, she tripped, spoiled and ruined every job that Summer had, she wasn't a curse.

It wasn't easy being a ten year old girl. Summer constantly had to keep her out of trouble, sometimes losing her job in the process. Pearl tried to help but she would somehow find ways to ruin things. At the third job Summer had found, one of the workers had called her a curse.

“First time is luck. Second time is a coincidence. But the third time is a curse.”

Summer paid him no attention and Pearl was grateful. They had lost their parents in a conflict at a young age and had been struggling to survive since. Job after job, Summer worked her fingers off but it never seemed to be enough because…

“Pearl!”

She had broken an expensive glass cup while trying to help. “I'm sorry.”

“Nevermind. Just sit over there. I'll clean it up.”

Summer almost lost her job that day. Pearl just happened to trip, fall and break things. She had no control over them. She started to feel that she was a curse, but her sister said she wasn't and she believed.

It was a cold afternoon. Summer was cleaning a room in her boss's house. Pearl wandered into an empty dark room. She switched on the lights and was wowed. The room was magnificent. As she strolled, she came up on some papers in a drawer. They revealed something illegal about the boss and the mafia gang that the police had been trying to catch. There was a heavy reward for them. She and her sister would never work again.

Pearl didn't tell Summer. She wanted it to be a surprise. As they walked home, Pearl thought of giving the information to the police and collecting the reward. The next day, she snuck out of the boss's house and rushed to the police. They told her she would get the reward at his house. And she stupidly believed.

They came on time but it wasn't for the boss. They came for her and Summer. Pearl indeed got her reward: her sister's death. She watched from the balcony as they dragged her screaming sister outside. They shot her many times till she screamed no more. Her sister knew nothing but they couldn't take chances.

Before they could come for her, she escaped. But where would she go? She lost her sweet sister. The only family she had. She cried as she ran till she could cry and run no more. She collapsed on the floor. Thoughts swirled in her mind. Was she really a curse?

Pearl was no longer a little girl. She had grown up to be thick skinned and tough. Her dull eyes carried hatred as she watched her former boss enjoy his life in his mansion. She would get her revenge. She would be a curse to all.
