An elderly Nigerian woman on Omugwo, the traditional postnatal care visit to support a new mother, has become an unexpected online sensation after unleashing a fiery curse on a thief who stole her friend’s phone.
The incident came to light after her daughter, Oge Ugwuka, shared a video on Facebook capturing the moment her mother confronted the suspected thief over the phone. The stolen device belonged to the older woman’s friend, who had been distressed and searching for it.
In the clip, the grandmother’s voice rings out, equal parts anger and authority, as she addresses the person who picked up the stolen phone. Her words, delivered in unmistakable Nigerian cadence, cut straight to the point.
“Thunder will fire you with that phone,” she warns. “Why did you hold somebody’s phone? The person is crying around. Don’t call this number again because I will trace you out. Take time oh.”
The call, according to Oge’s account, was not the first attempt to reach the number. Her mother’s friend had been dialing repeatedly, hoping the phone might be returned. When the line finally connected again, the elderly woman took over and, as her daughter put it, “lost it.”
Oge explained that before the now-viral outburst, her mother had already threatened the thief with spiritual consequences, telling the person she would pray until they lost their peace of mind and were forced to return the phone.
“Somebody stole my mum’s friend phone and she called her number again today to see if she has retrieved it,” Oge wrote in her caption. “The person still picked and my mother lost it. She first told the person she will pray until he looses his mind and returns the phone. The way I laughed today eh.”
The video has resonated with many Nigerians who recognize both the humor and the seriousness in the woman’s reaction. Her words reflect a familiar blend of moral outrage, spiritual warning and community justice, where elders use both prayer and pointed language to confront wrongdoing.
While it remains unclear whether the phone was ever returned, the thief has now been publicly put on notice by a grandmother who clearly refuses to let the matter go quietly.
