My Outer Space - 9 months ago

Space is something that intrigues me everyday. How humans are able to calculate and dedicate a lot of time to send other humans out of God's green earth is very baffling to me. I've never been a firm believer on outer space because I never really saw the essence of it. Why would someone want to leave this place to go and be floating around in darkness? what is so special there? these were questions I always asked myself.
I remember watching a movie "Hidden Figures" which tells the story of three black women who worked really hard to be seen for their potential rather than the colour of their skin. One of these women worked with NASA. She was in charge of the algorithms and calculations involved in taking 7 men to space for the first time. Anytime her scene comes up where she's doing the calculations, I would be in so much awe because one misstep, one miscalculation could mean the end of this men.
Recently, NASA astronauts were "stuck" on the International Space Station (ISS) for over nine months, due to problems with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore were meant to be on the ISS for a routine eight-day stay but technical issues with their spacecraft extended their mission. A new crew by SpaceX (Elon Musk's)was sent there to relieve them so they could return back to earth. They are expected to arrive no earlier than Wednesday. As I watched the news, my whole perspective on space shifted. It suddenly occured to me why people are willing to do that. It's curiosity. The same way I was curious about why they would want to go there is the reason they do go there. They do it because they can. They want to explore what is outside the earth. Due to that, new innovations come which can help them in technological advancements. This inspires young people to dream big, think smart, and pursue their dreams.

For a long while, I've known that I can write. I've known that if I focus enough and put my head down, I would make a stellar writer. I want this opportunity because it would help me hone my skills. I write because I can. Just like how those astronauts were curious enough to know what's outside the earth, be curious enough to know what I could bring to your team if taken in.

This is an article I put up for an ongoing workshop. I decided to share it here 😊
